Staff Spotlight!

Marian is a kind and bubbly Adoption Counselor at our Santa Rosa shelter. She’s a team player and always has smile on her face. Like many of the staff members at SHS, Marian started out as a volunteer. It was during that time when she discovered her beautiful hound dog, Huckleberry, who was in need of a new home.

Huck2Surprisingly, Huckleberry wasn’t a shelter dog. He was listed on our Adoptions by Owner page, where locals can list pets they need to rehome. It’s a great option for people in non-urgent situations. It allows pet owners to screen potential adopters and share information they’ve learned about their pet. And most importantly, it’s great for pets. They avoid spending time in the shelter environment, which can be very stressful for them. While the Sonoma Humane Society makes every effort to ensure that an animal’s stay with us is pleasant and positive, a shelter will never be a home.

When Marian was showing a family around the adoption center and they didn’t find any dogs that suited their needs, she showed them the Adoptions by Owner page on our website. While she demonstrated how to navigate the site, she spotted Huckleberry. Marian relays,

“He was sitting so nicely for his picture. I went home and looked at him again. He was 9 months old and was already on his second home. After a lot of e-mailing with his owner, I finally got to meet him. I waited a week and then made the decision to adopt. After adopting him I immediately reached out to the SHS dog training team for a consultation. Then came a series of classes through SHS. The rest is history!”

You can find more information about our Adoptions by Owner page and our Dog Training Classes on our website. Thank you, Marian!
